The bell tower was designed as the exact replica of the original bell tower of Saint Fotini Church in Smyrna, which was blown up by the Turks in 1922.
The architectural study was based on information collected from archives and old photographs of the time. The study revealed that the bell tower was an outstanding example of ecclesiastical architecture, 39 meters in height and 1.500 cubic meters in volume. It had been designed by the Smyrna architect Xenophon Latris in such a way that the arcade was the main entrance to the church, and also large enough for carriages to get through.
The form, proportions and architectural ornamentation of the bell tower are the same as those of the original in Smyrna. The materials used for the construction were as light as possible in order to reduce weight. The building base is covered with Kapandriti Stone, while exceptional are the decorative elements used such as: crosses, lanterns, copper covered dome etc. A total of six bells are installed, one large bell and five smaller ones, that operate electronically. The project was funded by the Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.
